Not to give away all my secrets, but from business strategy to bike building, I approach everything the same way.
I’m not much into plowing over the old to make room for new. Whether it’s a team or my latest motorcycle project, I start by finding what’s unique and beautiful about whatever I’m working on. In business, that’s your Unique Value Proposition; in a bike, it’s the cool that can’t be purchased from a dealership.
For the last two days, I’ve enjoyed sweating down country roads listening hard to this old girl to figure out what makes her cool, what works, and what needs modernizing. Next, I will double down on the cool, fix what’s broken, and modernize the under-the-skin gear holding her back.
The same goes for a business. We’ve all experienced disruptors who don’t care about the distinctive, special characteristics your customer likes most about your org. Their solution is to blow up everything and replace it with a sparkly new, sexy, massively oversimplified solution, that will make them fame-ish.
Me? I prefer to wrench on companies the way I wrench on bikes—to discover what makes them unique—your UVP. To circle the words that describe you best, celebrate your secret advantages, and double down. Invest here. And invest big. Bolt a turbocharger on what you’re good at to make it scream. Then … fix the broken stuff and modernize the rest.
Let’s talk about what this might look like for the next chapter of your organization. 🙂
